Dr. George Amofah

GPHA | President

Dr. Amofah George retired as Deputy Director-General of Ghana Health Service in December 2011, after serving in various capacities at all levels of Ghana’s health care delivery system as Primary Health Care Coordinator, District Health Director, and Regional Director of Health Services, as well as National Director of Public Health. He is a Fellow of West African College of Physicians (by examinations), and a Founding Fellow of Ghana College of Physicians. He is a part-time lecturer at the Ghana College of Physicians (Faculty of Public Health), and School of Public Health, University of Ghana, Legon. Dr. Amofah George is the President of the Ghana Public Health Association after serving previously as General Secretary and Vice President of the Association. He is a founding member of the Ghana Public Health Association since 2011. Dr. Amofah is currently a Governing Council member of the World Federation of Public Health Associations, representing the African Region. He has several publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals and has two books to his credit.

Dr. Erasmus E. A. Agongo

GPHA | Vice-President

Dr. Erasmus E. A. Agongo is a Consultant Public Health Physician and Foundation Fellow of GCPS with more than 30 yrs in clinical practice, health administration, and public health practice in Ghana. After retirement from the public sector, he continues to run a local health NGO, provide consultancy services and carry out joint development and research projects with the Faculty of Public Health of the GCPS. Dr. Erasmus was the first Treasurer of the GPHA and now the current Vice-president. His interest areas are health policy and systems development and evaluation, governance and leadership, human resources development, and field epidemiology.

Dr. Gilbert Buckle

GPHA | General Secretary

Dr. Gilbert is a Public Health Physician. He holds an MBChB and an MPH. He has over 27 years of extensive experience (nationally and internationally). His passion is in designing healthcare programs and strengthening health systems, leading health care systems and organizations to enhanced performance and improved quality of care outcomes. He is also an Organisational Development Certified Consultant and an Executive Coach. He brings these competencies to bear in his work. Gilbert also possesses professional and academic certificates in Health Systems Strengthening and Quality of care, acquired as part of his desire to remain up to date on developments in his chosen area of expertise. Dr. Buckle currently works as an Independent Consultant in Health Systems Strengthening and Healthcare Quality, providing services to both governments as well as local and international health organizations.  He serves as a part-time lecturer in the School of Public Health of the University of Ghana, Legon.

Dr. Mary Eyram Ashinyo

GPHA | Deputy General Secretary

Dr. Mary Eyram Ashinyo is a Physician Specialist – Public Health and employed with the Ghana Health Service as Deputy Director of the Institutional Care Division responsible for Quality and Safety. Her work involves working with diverse stakeholders in the planning, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and oversight of healthcare quality programs and strengthening health systems within which quality and safe care can be rendered in all Ghana Health Service healthcare facilities. She is a passionate and internally motivated quality manager with global and national presence. Previously Dr. Ashinyo worked as a Medical Superintendent in the Ghana Health Service (2012-2018) and received several awards in recognition of her grassroots work and transformational leadership including the Mandela Washington Fellowship Award by President Barack Obama and the United States of America Department of State in 2015, the Young Physician Leaders’ Award from the Inter-Academy Partnership and the World Academy of Sciences in 2016 and the Women Leaders in Global Health award from the Stanford University Centre for Global Health Innovations in 2017. Dr. Ashinyo is a Member of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, holds a Master’s degree in Public Health from the School of Public Health- University of Ghana, a Diploma of advanced studies in Health Care and Management from the Swiss Tropical Institute of Public Health -Switzerland, a certificate in Public Management and leadership from Howard University in Washington D.C., and other certificates of management and leadership from the European School of Management and Technology – Berlin/Germany and GIMPA- (Health Administration and Management – HAM, 2012) Accra/Ghana. She is an early career researcher, loves volunteering in Ghana’s prisons, reading, taking photos, shopping with the girls and watching cartoon with her family as hobbies. She is a 2020 Health Policy Analysis Fellow awarded by the Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research and a Fellow of the International Society for Healthcare Quality – ISQua

Dr. Perdita Hilary Lopes

Dr. Lopes attended Mfantsiman Girls Secondary School, then graduated Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zagreb, Croatia, Applied Epidemiology and Disease Control University of Ghana Legon. She served with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture for about two decades. An ardent public health advocate, has played keys roles in zoonosis and pandemics prevention, notably rabies, and the West Africa Disaster Prevention Initiative in the wake of the Ebola outbreak in the region in 2014-2016. Experience in One Health Approach to tackling emerging public health concerns. Currently the Regional One Health Specialist for the Fleming Fund West Africa

Mr. James Mckeown Amoah

James Mckeown Amoah is a Senior Nursing Officer at the Renal Dialysis Unit of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra. He is a graduate from the University of Ghana and a YALI Alumnus. He is passionate about promoting health and total wellbeing of the people around him. James is the immediate past Public Relation Officer and now National Organizer for Ghana Public Health Association.
